Surgical Epilepsy Center

Epilepsy is a common condition, affecting as many as 1 in 100 individuals.  While a seizure can occur in anyone, those with epilepsy have a lower threshold for seizues to occur.  For many this can be treated with medication and offer a normal life.

For some patients, however, the abnormal area of the brain does not respond well to medication.  If this area can be carefully identified, surgical removal of this focus may be an approrpriate step.  This requires a detailed evaluation by a team of experts.

At UCSD Medical Center, we have assembled a team of neurologists, electrophysiologists, cognitive specialists, and neurosurgeons who work together to assess whether a patient with intractable seizures may be amenable to a surgical approach.
