Clerkship Mission Statement
For the students exploring neurosurgery as a career direction, the goal of this clerkship is to provide an introduction into neurosurgery as a clinical discipline. Focus will be placed on highlighting the fundamental tenets that drive neurosurgical care as well as the unique challenges that neurosurgical patients and practitioners face. Emphasis will be placed on what it means to be a neurosurgeon in an ever-changing health care system.
For the students with determined interest in neurosurgery, the goal of this clerkship is to refine your knowledge and appreciation of neurosurgery. There will be an emphasis placed on operative techniques, surgical nuances, and patient care related issues. Major efforts will be made to connect you with faculties who will serve to mentor your neurosurgical application and development.
For the international students, the goal of this clerkship is to provide an exposure to how neurosurgery is practiced in the U.S. Additionally, it will be an exposure to the wonderful city of San Diego and the extraordinary educational opportunities available at the University of California, San Diego.
A broader goal of the clerkship is to establish a fellowship of colleagues joined by this unique experience. Through this website, I hope that we will establish a network of UCSD neurosurgery clerkship alumni who will take pride in their experience here and draw upon each other as resource. I urge you to keep in touch with those with whom you shared this rotation and to freely seek out others who shared this experience with you.
We look forward to the opportunity to working with you to achieve these goals.
